The 2007 Rosalie Village Cheese
was a great success, attracting an attendance of 11,200 people. It was the Celebration of the Brisbane Cheese Awards that took place the day before, on Saturday, 9th June at Royal on the Park, Alice St, Brisbane City. Twenty-five judges determined the Primary Industries Cup winner as being Woodside Cheese with their “Edith”. Other major winners were the State Development Cup for the Best Queensland Cheese, Kingaroy Dairy with their “Bunya Brie”. Palatable Partners Cup for the Best Blue Vein Cheese was won by Meredith Dairy for their “Goat Blue”; Black Pearl Epicure Cup for the best White Mould Cheese was won by Kingaroy Dairy for their “Bunya Brie”. The Cheese Links Cup for the Best Cheddar was won by Ashgrove Cheddar for their “Black Wax”.
The Carnivàle Day started with a children’s programme in Gregory Park. Children from Milton State School were assembled in the park to conduct the Carnivàle Cheese Parade, which was the climax of eight weeks preparation and training by three resident teachers funded by the Village to assist students in the programme.
The Carnivàle had a comprehensive multi-cultural theme involving the Brisbane South-American communities. This was organised by Mr Omar Pumar of Orisha International, who was also the team leader in student training at Milton State School. The Event Manager and Festival Director was Ms Sharyn de Kort from Sharyn DK Event Management.
A comprehensive publicity programme was put together and proved most successful in gaining an improved attendance over last year’s event. It involved radio, and printed media as follows:
- 3 articles in Westside News
- 5 radio interviews
- 3 articles in The Courier Mail, and Courier Mail website
- 1 article in The Brisbane News
- 1 article in Image magazine
- 1 article in Style magazine
- Event listing in OurBrisbane.com website
- Rosalie Village Festival website
- Queensland Holidays website
- About Australia website
- My247 website
- Food and Wine trails
Fifteen Cheese Producers provided free cheese tastings and offered their produce for sale during the day. People showed more interest in the cheese than the entertainment, other than for the Carnivàle parade which was most colourful and the clear highlight of the day.
There was a fascinating blend of people who attended on the day. There were people from provincial Queensland, from greater Brisbane, and from the local village. They were from all age groups and included children. People felt safe and comfortable, were totally relaxed, and enjoyed the street entertainment. Many engaged conversations with Cheese Producers and in turn with each other. Age groups and backgrounds were crossed and observations shared as cheese tasting was the order of the day. It is a truly wonderful recipe for community development and for provincial Cheese Producers to be put face to face with their city cousins. The timing of the programme assisted the pleasantness of the outcome by finishing at 5pm and starting a little earlier than last year.
The Association wish to thank the sponsors, the authorities, and the security service for putting together a day of excellent entertainment and community development.
